Derby Day 2020

Today is Kentucky Derby Day 2020 and unfortunately, due to this blasted virus situation, the event has been rescheduled for September 5. So, the first Saturday in May will pass without the “Run for the Roses” for the first time since World War II. We felt compelled to put together a Derby Day Bundle to ease the pain.

The Caveman Team did the Kentucky Derby many years ago. There were no fancy hats or expensive suits involved, my friends, quite the contrary. We were much younger, very broke, and relegated to the infield. For anyone who has not experienced the infield on Derby Day, this is basically a gathering that, if you had to classify it, would fall somewhere between fraternity party and prison riot.

Fuzzy as the memories are from that day, you can never forget feeling the ground shake as the horses pass, and of course, the wonder of the mint julep. Sugar, mint, bourbon and ice, expertly blended to make a wonderfully refreshing beverage.

There are a few crucial tenets that constitute a proper Derby Day mint julep;
  1. Good quality bourbon. Old Forester is the tradition, but any good, sturdy bourbon will work. We like Maker’s Mark.
  2. Simple Syrup and Mint, traditionally spearmint in the South.
  3. A metal cup with lots of crushed ice so a nice frost forms on the outside.
  4. A straw.
The traditional cup for a julep is an 8 ounce pewter or silver cup, which would be held by the bottom or top edge to prevent heat transfer from the hand, and allow that delicious, chilly frost to form. While we will typically give a nod to tradition in these circumstances, everyone knows that 8oz. cups are for children. On top of that, try to hold those sippy cups by the rim and you lose another full inch of volume that could be filled with cold, tasty bourbon.

So, we put together a proper package that is both stylish and functional, designed to maximize your mint julep pleasure.

2 of our full 16oz copper finish party cups, 2 stainless mint julep straws, deluxe ice bag and mallet and a recipe card with our official mint julep recipe, designed exclusively for this package and tested thoroughly in the Custom Caveman labs. This package contains everything you need to demonstrate your mastery of this beloved cocktail.

Order today and you will have plenty of time to practice before the actual Derby run on September 5th.

We’ll go ahead and give you our recipe now…why wait to begin practicing?

Mint Julep Recipe (For 2 Properly Stiff Servings)

Make a Mint Simple Syrup
  1. Combine 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup water in a space pan.
  2. Thoroughly wash 1 bunch of spearmint and add to pan.
  3. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring to dissolve all sugar.
  4. When mixture boils, reduce heat to medium low and simmer five minutes.
  5. Turn off heat, and let cool.
  6. Once cooled, strain into a jar and put in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Make the Mint Julep
  1. Bust out a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. You do have a proper cocktail shaker or mixing glass, correct? If not (shameless plug), click here to get one;
  2. Muddle 5-6 mint leaves in the bottom.
  3. Add 6 ounces of bourbon.
  4. Add 2 ounces of mint simple syrup and stir to combine.
  5. Place ice in bag and beat it like it owes you money.
  6. Fill Copper Party Cups with ice to the top with crushed ice, and add the julep straw spoon.
  7. Add some ice to your shaker or mixing glass, and stir for 30 seconds to chill.
  8. Strain mixture into two cups over ice.
  9. Take a mint sprig and give it a slap to release the essence, and garnish each cup.
  10. Slather upon yourself and allow the uninitiated to pleasure their souls.

Increase the syrup content if you like a sweeter drink. Recipe scales up proportionally to full as many friends as you can fit in your home at six foot increments.
